Easter Poem for a Mantel
Let me tell you about a mantel
firmly etched into my memory.
It would be almost half the size
of this ornate Italian Marble.
Made of wood and fire not used
as I recall. While in the front
of that mantel stood a small
pedestal which had two shelves
that housed all my treasures.
A little tin for pocket money,
my writing compendium and
letters. I still have those letters;
postcards; my knitting, etc, etc.
At Easter mother’s darning basket
now bereft of wool and darning needles
has suddenly become a nest.
Oh! the excitement of Easter treats
for my sisters and I.
How haloed that mantel to me.
And a cottage long demolished.
