And though I do; sighs and tears aside.
Not choices made; late circumstance
never dreamed of. Whose sorry applied!
We were looking down that mountainside.
No one sees such things in advance.
We were different. We were the same.
And, for us both, it was slow to sink in.
We were slow to ask. Do we a have blame?
And if so why? Too close to the frame
unfolding: what we should have seen.
Some joke as to the paths they might take.
But this shelters the deeper truth to face.
And what lies there with decisions make.
Re-started our journey, trying to retrace
A thing not to be replaced, nor commonplace.
Compromise; a question with no answer.
How taken for granted it had been before.
We were different. How then to cater
For care-giving; his needs so much greater.
We took it as it came, with sighs, tears and more.
More of what it takes when renewing
An old path. Things never foreseen
While once in a while accounting
for a growth. And the mourning
when it came had sad and sweeter been.

Notes:
And now, for today’s (optional) prompt. In the world of well-known poems, maybe there’s no gem quite so hoary as Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem about your own road not taken – about a choice of yours that has “made all the difference,” and what might have happened had you made a different choice.
